I’m off for a bit of a wander around the former Soviet Union.

To start with, I’ll be spending a week in Moscow. Then later in the year - and early next year – I’ll be taking a longer trip through ALL the countries that made up the USSR.

This blog will keep you up-to-date with my progress.

I have great plans for the blog. I see it becoming a kind of Web 2.5 extravaganza with photos, videos and dancing cossacks.

Of course, it all depends on how many shots of vodkas are forced upon me during my travels. I suspect it could simply end up as the drunken ramblings of a mad man. With lots of spelling mistakes.

The logo’s fanastic – it’s so, well, Soviet.

Perhaps in your travels you’ll be able to test the probable urban myth I heard: that vodka is sold only in bottles with corks, not screw caps, in Russia as no-one ever has ‘just a sip’. It’d be an excuse for the typos.

Hey Peter,

Are you planning on trying to get to any of the republics that think they are still in the USSR?! Like Transnistria in Moldova or Abkhazia in Georgia? Transnistria is fine to get in and out of but the others I believe present slightly more of a problem!

Hi Adam,
That’s the plan. I want this to be an ‘old skool’ Peter Moore adventure.

I’ve heard the same thing re: Transnistria and Abkhazia. I guess I play it by ear when I’m there.
