Sounds a shade like Quentin Tarantino's Hostel. You were lucky to get out of there.

Found one of these and persuaded Jodie to go in, even though she was a bit wary of a Russian self-service eatery. But are we glad we found it. The staff were most helpful, getting us through our obvious confusion, and the food was great. I couldv'e quite happily ate there for every meal, but we only found one on our final evening. Cheers, Peter.

Wow, respect to the babushkas who sent you to this place - they knew that place served meals :-))

Cool experience, I must say. I think that your friend's reaction was so strange is because Russians believe that strip-shows are something so typical for the Western everyday culture that you wouldn't be surprised at all. Ask her to see whether or not I am wrong.

I personally hope that this was not the most exciting experience from your trip to Moscow, please prove me right :-) Also, I am sure you are aware, but just to make a point - Moscow is not what Russia is on the whole, although it is quite enough to get a feeling of what people are like :-)

Despite Peter's best attempts to slander my good name, I am not an alcoholic. Mind you, 90 roubles seems a fair price for such an inviting establishment. So perhaps I am!

Hey Claire - I had the same thing. Got a few weird looks but only at the stations that were a bit further out. I thought I might get hassled by one of the babushkas in the booths at the bottom of the escalators. They had a bank of TVs with CCTV feeds from the platforms but the couldn't care less.

I'm a massive fan of the Moscow metro myself... I can't think what all the Muscovites thought when at every station I would pull out my camera!

St Pete's is great too, the advantage that you get to go even further below ground before getting there (it's one of the deepest in the world)
